Sources: Capel to return to Duke as assistant

Posted on: May 8, 2011 10:23 am

Jeff Capel won't be unemployed for long.

The recently fired Oklahoma coach will, barring a change of plans, join Mike Krzyzewski's staff at Duke as a full-time assistant in time for next season, multiple sources have told CBSSports.com. One of the sources added that current Blue Devil assistant Nate James is expected to be reassigned, meaning Krzyzewski's staff will consist of Chris Collins, Steve Wojciechowski and Capel.

Capel is a former Duke player who coached Oklahoma the past five seasons. The 36 year-old North Carolina native is responsible for luring Blake Griffin into the OU program and taking the Sooners to the Elite Eight in 2009. He was fired after last season when OU finished 5-11 in the Big 12.

ahh....you can only wish grograns...but you KNOW that Coach K is going absolutely nowhere....he will remain on the sidelines of Coach K court for as long as he coaches organized basketball...and to think that Capel will be the successor?...what kind of drugs are you taking?...dream on...he has already turned down the Lakers once...and if they come calling, he'll do it again...it's not a matter of money...he already has that...and of course, the best coaching job in college basketball.

The writing is on the wall, Dukies.... This hire means Coach K will be stepping down soon. He just brought in a highly qualified replacement in Capel. The guy can recruit (B. Griffin), has coached in a high profile conference (the Big 12) & has been battled tested. Hmmmm, Phil Jackson stepping away from the Lakers (finally)?? Maybe the Lakers make one last plea & through TONS of cash, plus a call from Kobe, at Coach K now...

The three most overrated guards in Duke History are now sitting next to K!  There is only so much floor slapping they can teach.

Sooner fan here, and I didn't have a problem with Capel being fired. It doesn't appear that he did anything illegal, but he wasn't bringing in guys with great work ethic or attitudes. He made the most out of Blake Griffin's time in Norman (though he had nothing to do with his recruitment).

I think he can be a very good head coach, it just wasn't a good fit at OU.

Even as a UNC fan I like seeing Capel back on Tabacco Road!  Very professional and admirable.  OU shouldnt have given up on him so soon.

Definitely a great hire bringing back one of your own in Capel.  He has an impressive Head Coaching resume and should be back on the sideline as one in possibly a few years.

Great hire by Mike Krzyzewski by hiring former Duke player Jeff Capel to his staff as a full-time assistant. Capel did have a few good seasons as head coach at Oklahoma and did get some good recruits to come there and he should do the same as a assistant to Krzyzewski to by getting good recruits and learning them to at Duke. Once again it is a good hire by Duke and Kryzewski by getting Capel to his staff.

check your facts.  james has a young child and is being "reassigned" so that he can keep his job and travel less while he raises a family.
