Manhattan hiring Louisville assistant

Posted on: April 10, 2011 8:51 pm

Louisville assistant Steve Masiello has reached an agreement in principle to become Manhattan's next head coach, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Sunday.

An official announcement is expected Monday.

Masiello is a former Manhattan assistant with New York roots and strong ties to the New York recruiting scene. The 33 year old recruited multiple New York-area players for Louisville -- among them Samardo Samuels, Earl Clark, Edgar Sosa, Francisco Garcia and Derrick Caracter.

Masiello replaces Barry "Slice" Rohrssen.

Hey IronyIdiot, my comment was actually for the initial poster (not Gary Parrish), who mentioned what a huge loss this was for UofL.  But keep up the good message board patrol work, champ.

I didnt mention anything about Steve keeping his nose clean, but his involvement in the Derby ticket scalping fiasco, some people would have lost their job.  That was not a proud moment for the program any more than the Sypher affair.

Nice - discredit Steve after he takes another position.  Real classy like your coach...at least the HARDCARD won't speak poorly of Steve.

Talk about reading into the sentence that was written.  It merely said Masiello was involved with the recruiting effort.  You have to be a donk to believe ANYBODY out there thinks the players Masiello recruited at Louisville with the guy bearing the license plate HARDCARD would be now coming to Manhattan.
I just pray Steve keeps his nose clean, and more importantly, his back clean from laying on restaurant floors and bathrooms! ewwwww!

Let's be honest- he seems to be a good guy who has lived and breathed basketball his whole life and been mentored by one of the best minds in basketball; BUT to think that he's the main reason why the names listed in the article came to Louisville is preposterous.  Does anyone in their right mind think that those kids would have committed to Louisville without Rick Pitino's presence?  Without the facilities in which Louisville has invested?  Without the tradition of a school with multiple national championships and Final Four appearances?  Without the Big East affiliation?

Masiello has a bright future, but Louisville won't miss a beat.

I disagree, this is in now way a "huge loss" for Louisville, far from it.  Recruiting has been hit and miss with Massielo, which is why Asst. Coach Fuller was brought in.  Recruiting and player development have been issues at Louisville.  Derrick Caracter was under Massielo's wing and look at how that worked.  Louisville will be better off bringing in a top flight assistant quite honestly.  Time for change.
