The annual John-Calipari-to-the-NBA reports are officially underway.

(What took so long?)

Peter Vecsey's column in the New York Post on Friday is headlined "Kentucky coach may be on Knicks' radar." There's nothing concrete about the headline and really no substance to the report. It's mostly just speculation rooted in the speculation of a person Vecsey describes as a team executive "who knows a thing or two about a thing or two regarding goings-on behind the screens," which is a cute way of saying "I'm gonna toss this against the wall, and, at some point, we'll see if it sticks."

So will it stick?

Honestly, who knows?

What I can tell you, though, is that this is not the first time I've heard a Calipari-Knicks rumor. One was brought to me before the Final Four, for what it's worth, but it's difficult to separate fact from fiction with this stuff, especially when the Knicks are still playing with a coach still under contract. In other words, we'll have to wait and see where this goes, then see what happens next. But similar to how I stated that Calipari would've left Kentucky last year for the opportunity to coach LeBron James, I have no doubt Calipari would leave Kentucky this year for the opportunity to coach Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony (and perhaps Chris Paul) with the Knicks.

Will Calipari get that opportunity?

Again, who knows?

But the annual speculation is something UK fans will never be able to avoid.

I don't think I ever will, because I don't cheat in my life. I do things the right way.

Rather than look at facts, you want him to be a cheater. He has to be responsible. There is no grey area in your mind.

It's as if you glossed over my entire post and just simply say "you don't want to know and don't care to know". It happened and it's his fault it happened.

That's my whole point. Nobody wants to know the truth when it hurts their argument. They just say: He's the coach and it happened under his watch... so therefore he's a slimeball cheater.

That is brilliant analysis. God, I hope you never have a situation where your reputation is judged in a similar manner.

What did Cal do at UMass and Memphis? Don't know and Don't care... fact of the matter is he is the only coach that has had to vacate two final fours.... this in itself is an amazing coincidence to happen to a coach twice at two different schools... maybe its the caliber of people he recruits? dont know and dont care... he runs the ship and is responsible for all of it one way or another.

What exactly did Calipari do at UMASS and Memphis that "landed those schools in trouble"?

Everyone assumes he did something simply because those Final Fours were vacated.

Camby took money from an agent in his home state during the summer between semesters away from UMASS's campus and away from Calipari. It was Calipari that informed the NCAA about Camby's violation once he discovered the problem.

Same thing with Derek Rose. Rose took the SAT in Detroit and was cleared by the NCAA to play for any school of his choosing. He then decided to play for Memphis. (Btw, there still is no proof that Rose did anyhting wrong). How is Calipari responsible for that? Should Calipari have been claivoyant and been able to see the future and the NCAA making a 180 turn a year later?

Tell me -- if you raise a perfect child and he or she becomes an adult and commits some heinous crime -- is it your responsibility... and should you be punished for your grown child's actions? It's the same scenario with Calipari. You can do everything in your power as a coach and/or administrator to prevent these things from happening. It's impossible watch these kids 24/7. The best you can do is try to recruit kids that will make good decisions... and maybe that is Calipari's only fault in that he sometimes takes kids that could potentially do dumb things.

But would any of you say that either Camby or Rose is a bad person now? I doubt it.

One other thing to Kentucky fans. First off I like Kentucky and am not a hater. I don't know why not because I hate Duke and UNC, but I don't. That said, stop defending this slimeball. You don't have to stop rooting for Kentucky, just stop talking about him. He may  well have mended his ways, and may not need to cheat at Kentucky to get the top recruits as he obviously did have to at UMASS and Memphis, but the fact remains his teams have had to vacate seasons because of his dirty actions. Your alum may be smarter and more honorable than the alum at those other schools because they have been here before, and not break the rules just because he is willing to look the other way. You didn't hire him so there really is nothing for you to defend.

Pump up your chest and support your team and your players. Even support your coach as far as what he has and should do at your school, but stop trying to defend his past. It's indefensible because he really did do all those things and land those schools in trouble. It's not a coincedence that everywhere he goes, it goes too.

72-112 as a pro coach and 0-3 in the playoffs. Hasn't he figured out he can't coach when everybody is allowed to pay their players?
