Pittsburgh standout Ashton Gibbs will declare for the NBA Draft but will not hire an agent, a source told on Tuesday.

Gibbs averaged 16.8 points and shot 49.0 percent from 3-point range this season.

The 6-foot-2 guard is not projected as a first-round pick.

Gibbs can withdraw from the draft by the May 8 deadline and return to Pittsburgh as long as he maintains his amateur status. A source close to Gibbs told that Gibbs returning for his senior year remains the most likely scenario given his uncertain draft status.

"I think he just wants to get some workouts in with NBA teams," the source said.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is April 24.

I think this is a smart move for Gibbs. He will be able to test the market, get exposure, and determine interest from NBA teams. Plus, he still has the option of returning for his senior season if teams do not show the interest he hopes for. If they do, though, he becomes a millionaire. I really do not see a down side to what he is doing.

I think he will ultimately return to school for his senior season, but if he does follow through on his dream I wish him the best of luck and thank him for his service at Pitt.

PS - Congrats to Ashton (and Brad) on the All-American Honorable Mention.

As a Pitt alumni and fan, I truly hope Ashton comes back and plays for Pitt next year. However, if he goes to the NBA I truly wish him all the best. He was an asset to Pitt the last few years and I know Jamie Dixon will miss his talent and leadership abilities!!
