Craft on Pearl: "My heart goes out to him."

Aaron Craft is one of the reasons Ohio State is the No. 1 overall seed in this NCAA tournament.

He's also, at least partly, the reason Tennessee fired Bruce Pearl on Monday.

Pearl's NCAA troubles that led to his dismissal began last summer when the NCAA obtained a photo that showed Pearl hosting Craft at his Knoxville home in September 2008. Because Craft was a high school junior at the time, the contact was impermissible. Pearl lied about the details of the picture when the NCAA initially approached him about it. He was charged with unethical conduct last month and let go three days after UT's season ended.

Craft commented about Pearl to CBSSports.com.

"My heart goes out to him," Craft said. "I feel bad for Coach Pearl. He was a good guy to me. My heart goes out."

Ohio State plays Kentucky on Friday in the Sweet 16.

Craft on Pearl: "My heart goes out to him."

Coaching has to about more than just winning. Pearl was a very shady character, but UT fans continue to support him. Pearl led UT to its best six year run in men's basketball, ever; but he has also been accused of 10 major NCAA violations during his tenure at UT, so he had to go. The NCAA will punish him just like they will UT, so he will not have a coaching job for a while. I suspect you will see him on ESPN or some other media outlet. I have to be honest and just say that people that put winning above integrity and character disgust me. That goes for the coaches and and their supporters.

Bruce should not have been fired. Our AD Mike Hamilton is a complete joke and frankly how he continues to hold on to his job is just mind boggling.
Was Bruce a saint? No but I think overall Tennessee would have been better off weathering the storm with him.
Mike Hamilton has ruined Tennessee's football program and now he has ruined the basketball program as well. Thank god Pat Summit is so legendary otherwise I'm sure Hamilton would find a way to screw that up as well.
I have never called for another persons job but Mike Hamilton is an embarrassment to Tennessee.

Craft on Pearl: "My heart goes out to him."

I feel bad for the Vols Basketball program, students and fans. Pearl ushered in a winning program and had the School of Tennessee rooting for something other then their down on it's luck, lane Kiffen debacle of a football program which started with the firing of Phillip Fulmer. I saddens me that Pearl gave so much hope and promise to the the Volls hoops team but he did it in an unscrupulous manor, breaking several NCAA rules. I like the energy and enthusiasm he brought to the Tennessee team but I do not feel sorry for him at all. He brought this on himself and ruined a program on the rise. This could set the Volls program back who knows how many years. Unfortunately the punishment will only effect Tennessee and will allow Pearl to go out and get another job without any consequences, and someone will give him a shot at a head coaching position for sure. The NCAA should look at adjusting its punishments for violators to include the coaches if they are the reason for the violations.

Who cares about Tressell? Not me!! I think Pearl should stay and be given a chance. Excuse me, he has already done better than the last 5 or 6 coaches did. Then again, Tennessee did well with the hiring of Dooley and they will do well again in selecting a honest coach for the men's b'ball program. Dam it Bruce, you had it it made dude.

Thank you for clearly stating my point! Hosting RECRUITS VS Allowing SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS to tarnish your university. Make no mistake, Tressel LIED too! People in OHIO don't care that their coach is letting his players "hang" with "bad dudes" as long as the winning continues. While Bruce Pearl is taking his kids to Israel to learn about his background and heritage, Tressel is still trying to learn the words to Sloopy. This year, he finally figured out how to do the hand jestures to O-H-I-O.

Bruce Pearl is a great coach and recruiter. Unfortunately, some of his recruiting wasn't quite up to snuff with the NCAA. They have rules. It's too bad that this man that loves the sport and his kids so much won't be allowed to continue to be a part of so many player's lives. I would have loved to play for Coach Pearl. He may not be the most above board coach, as it has been pointed out, but his love of the game and his interactions with his team and other Vol's programs is something to emulate. Replacing him won't be that tough with the number of good coaches out there, but I doubt any would bring the vigor that Coach Pearl brought to Knoxville. It's a sad day for Vol's fans and Tennessee. I wish Coach Pearl a quick turnaround, hopefully he won't be viewed as a habitual liar and will be given a chance, sooner than later. Good luck Bruce.

My comment on "karma" is related to the fact that Matta/ Craft are the ones who turned Bruce in- YES, YES, YES what Bruce did was wrong and deserves punishment, but not telling admin @ tOSO is a lie by omission- plain and simple

You can be certain the NCAA won't re-state the facts as you just have. Tressel was told his kids were selling memorabilia to a gentleman involved in a federal investigation. Despite what you say- he was never- NEVER- told to keep it confidential. Selling items was an NCAA violation and Tressel knew it (or certainly should have known it). He then sat on it, in violation of NCAA regulations and his contract with Ohio State. He then proceeded to play these players for an entire season knowing they had violated NCAA regulations and told no one. Later, when asked about it in December by his AD- he lied about it saying he knew nothing. Only when the email came public did Tressel tell the truth. What Tressel did was FAR FAR worse then what Pearl did. Like Pearl he knowling concealed an NCAA violation from the NCAA. Unlike Pearl, he gained on the field because of it. He should be fired. Today.

That is the most ridiculous comment I've ever heard. Pearl had juniors over to house for a BBQ (which is a secondary violation) to attempt to gain a competitive advantage from a recruiting standpoint. He then lied about it, which I do not support, but let's not kid ourselves many coaches have done a lot worse. For example.... Jim Tressel

Tressel failed to report a MAJOR violation that immediately gave his team a competitive advantage because all 5 players should have been ineligible for the 2010 season. He then lied about it saying he never knew about the relationship. Just by looking at the severity and consequences of the offense its obvious Tressel's indecscretion is much worse.
