Did Washington just lose the Pac-10 title?

Washington seemed like a lock to win the Pac-10 one week ago.

Now the Huskies just seem like a mess.

They lost at unranked Washington State last Sunday, at not-even-close-to-being-ranked Oregon State on Thursday, and, most recently, at also-not-even-close-to-being-ranked
Oregon on Saturday. In other words, the Washington Huskies are impersonating the Washington Wizards, and now they're now 15-7 overall, 7-4 in the Pac-10. That record puts Lorenzo Romar's team third in the league standings -- behind Arizona (20-4, 9-2) and UCLA (16-7, 7-3) -- and means Washington is certain to exit the Top 25 (and one) when the rankings are updated Sunday afternoon.

And let's not attribute this downward spiral to the loss of Abdul Gaddy.

His torn ACL didn't help, no question. But the Huskies were 5-1 with wins over Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon State and Oregon in their first six games without Gaddy. Now they're on a three-game losing streak thanks to back-to-back losses to the same Oregon State and Oregon teams they handled last month by an average of 25 points.

The good news?

The Huskies' next two games -- and five of their final eight -- are at home.

The bad news?

The Huskies are two games behind Arizona with a game at the McKale Center still to come, meaning they'll likely finish with at least five league losses. Arizona, fresh off a 3-OT win at Cal, is projected to finish with no more than four.

Did Washington just lose the Pac-10 title?

Looks like its the NIC for the Huskies this year. They should think about leaving the 12-PAC and moving BB to the WCC if they ever want to win a Conference title.

Did Washington just lose the Pac-10 title?

As an Arizona fan I am enjoying the recent turn of events.  I would not, however, proclaim that it wasn't Washington's title to lose.  They were clearly the best team in the conference just a couple weeks ago.  They played better than all of us against non-conference foes.  Then they lost Gaddy and everyone wrote them off.  As Parrish wrote, they then went on to beat (badly) most of the Pac-10, including my Wildcats.

The Huskies have hit a huge bump in the road and fallen to teams they should have beaten.  It happens.  It especially happens when a team is leading their conference and starting to feel entitled.  This will either pull their confidence down so far that they can't recover or, more likely, this will wake them up and they'll be a dangerous team from here on out.  Does anyone remember the skid Arizona found themselves in right before the NCAA tournament of 1997?  They finished the Pac-10 11-7, losing the last two games against Stanford and California.  Then they got hot when it counted.

I know the Huskies haven't earned their way into the NCAA tournament yet but they're a good team and they'll pick it up from here.  I predict their only conference loss from here will be at McKale.  Arizona better not look past this game, however.  Washington is going to be dangerous from here on out.  And if they've circled any games on their schedule it's that one.

Did Washington just lose the Pac-10 title?

Arizona and UCLA historically rule the Pac-10. In Miller we trust.
Yes, this statement is accurate, but stevephoenix made it sound like they were the only teams that ever have a chance to win the conference, which, as I said, is not even slightly true, my proof being last year.

Did Washington just lose the Pac-10 title?

The Washington Huskies really never even had a chance to win the Pac-10 in the first place. The Pac-10 will always be owned by just two schools and that is Arizona Wildcats and the UCLA Bruins and even now the Bruins look like they are nobody's once again, so it looks like another Wildcats conference title like usual.
Go Wildcats!!!!!!!!
wow... that's like not even slightly true. do you remember last year at all? UCLA had a losing record and Arizona missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in like 25 years.

you just set us back about two years in explaining to people that UW is actually in the Pacific Northwest and not Washington, DC. Sure, good college sports fans will never get confused, but everybody else...

Did Washington just lose the Pac-10 title?

Typical Huskies.  Dominant at home and poor on the road.  UA just won the Pac 10 tonight.  However, the Huskies strike me as a team that will do what it did last year, play for the Pac 10 tournament title, and make a run to the Sweet 16.  They've always been pathetic on the road but they're built for the tourney.
