Note to ranked teams: Beware of Vols

Final score: Unranked Tennessee 104, No. 21 Memphis 84

So now Bruce Pearl's suspension is on deck and his Tennessee Vols officially (if only temporarily) belong to associate head coach Tony Jones. First thing Jones should do is put a number beside Arkansas' name. Just get a schedule and grab a marker and write a number beside the Razorbacks. Anything between one and 25 will do. Something like 17 seems reasonable. So Jones should scribble 17 beside Arkansas and point to it. If the Tennessee players fall for it, they'll start SEC play with an impressive road win Saturday.

That's the lesson from Wednesday night, isn't it?

When the Vols think they're playing a good team, they win.

Otherwise, they're at risk.

Tennessee dominated Memphis early, late and at all points in between at Thompson-Boling Arena, and it really wasn't as close as the final score indicates. The Vols led by 15 at the half and by 36 with less than six minutes remaining. The game got sloppy and closer late. But it was a beatdown from start to finish, and Tennessee is now 3-0 against ranked opponents and 7-4 against unranked opponents.

Seriously.

The Vols own wins over No. 5 Pittsburgh, No. 7 Villanova and No. 21 Memphis, and losses to unranked Oakland, unranked Charlotte, unranked Southern California and unranked Charleston. Granted, it's possible unranked Oakland, unranked Charlotte, unranked Southern California and unranked Charleston are all better than No. 21 Memphis, and that what happened Wednesday says more about the Tigers than it does UT. But the point remains the same. The Vols were presented with a ranked opponent on a big stage for the third time this season, and they played well and won such a game for the third time this season. They still haven't lost to a ranked team, but they've four times shown they're capable of losing to pretty much any school without a number next to its name.

So if Tony Jones is smart, he'll put a number next to Arkansas.

I'd go with 17.

He should scribble it on a schedule and show it to his players.

If they fall for it, they'll cruise.

If not, who knows?

Wow Lexington Blue.  Where are you?  I want to talk more.  I mean don't tell me a loss to Georgia is a good loss.

Note to ranked teams: Beware of Vols

Although it is a different year and stuff.  Kentucky do you remember just a couple of years ago losing to Gardner Webb and San Diego?  Who are they?  Obvioulsy Kentucky can lose to crap teams also.  Don't get on here and act as if Kentucky is better than everyone and never loses to cream puffs.  Kentucky is just as likely to lose to anyone as Tenn or anyone else is.  How about ya'll just go back to your Kentucky board and talk about John Wall and Demarcus Cousins and how well they are playing for ya'll.  Oh yea thats right.  They left after their Freshman year.  You honestly can't tell me you love how all your players do that.  Is it that fun to watch new players come in every year?  I mean do you judge yourself by how many #1 picks you get in the NBA?

You're so right Lexington Blue.  I mean I forgot we also made it to a Elite 8 last year along with Kentucky.  But you're right we suck.  Oh yea and I'm sorry we don't schedule cream puffs like Kentucky does.  ETSU, Portland, Boston U, Mississippi Valley State, Coppin St, Penn.  I'm mean it's cool to play 2 maybe 3 but 6?  Really?  Congrats you beat Washington when they was #11.  What are they now?  Oh yea not ranked.  Look at the teams that beat Tenn.  Oakland and CofC are both NCAA Tourny teams.  Yea we shouldn't have lost them.  But I don't believe Kentucky has proved themselves yet to come in here and run their mouths.  Name me 5 players who led their team to a National Championship as a Freshman and then left.  I can think of one.  Carmelo.  Kentucky WILL NEVER WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 1 AND DONES.

Also you wanna talk about our womens basketball team.  I live in Alabama and hear people laugh all the time about how I watch womens basketball.  Guess what.  If Pat Summit was your coach and won you 8 Championships you would watch too.  Just like everyone in Alabama is a football fan because they have 13 is the same as you Kentucky people when it comes to basketball.  Some of Pat Summits teams could have beat majority of mens teams.  Don't laugh because we have 8 Championships in womens basketball.  You would watch womens basketball too if ya'll could actually win some.

We owned the two best teams  currently in the BE...sorry you couldn't take part

But you got owned by the best team in the Summit and SoCon or wherever CoC is (BTW they lost by 20 to Morehead State), and middle of the road A10 and Pac 10 teams.

Is this article an excuse for Tennessees god awful losses?? Right now they have 2 very good wins and and a good win. Lets not forget they have 4 terrible losses. I think they are in as of right now but they are most certainly a bubble team. Losing to Oakland and Charlotte certainly cancels out a win verse Pitt. Getting blwon out by CoC certainly eliminates a nice win over Villanova. Losing to Usc virtually cancels out a win over a Memphis.

The committee respects quality losses and horrible losses stand out. If Tenn struggles in conference and loses to Uconn they will miss the tournament. Either way this team has no promise in March.

I wouldn't want to be associated with an SEC school that's know more for it's WOMEN'S basketball team than it's men's team.

Their women's team would beat their men's team.

To justify my first comment, Tennessee should be wildly proud of their Pitt and Villanova victories. Memphis is really mediocre though - this isn't John Calipari's Final-Four Memphis, this is Josh Pastner's ok-at-best Memphis. If this article contained less than 2 sentences about the Memphis rout, I would agree more, but it is ridiculous that Parrish bases this on a blowout win over a 3 loss team who's best win is Western Kentucky.
