UT's Hopson (finally) looking like a future pro

Brandon Jennings was the No. 1 prospect in Scout.com's Class of 2008 rankings.

Samardo Samuels was No. 2.

B.J. Mullens was No. 3.

The rest of the top 10 consisted of Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans, DeMar DeRozan, Greg Monroe, Devin Ebanks, Ed Davis and Scotty Hopson. What you might notice from that list is that every one of those guys except Hopson -- who was ranked sixth, right between DeRozan and Monroe -- has already played for an NBA franchise, which is evidence that Hopson didn't spend his first two years at Tennessee living up to expectations.

He spent Saturday doing it, though.

The 6-foot-7 guard took 13 shots, made 10 and finished with a career-high 27 points to help the 11th-ranked Vols to an 83-76 upset of No. 3 Pittsburgh. No, the game wasn't played on campus at the Peterson Events Center. But it was still in the city (at the new downtown home of the Penguins), and that means it was the Panthers' first non-league loss in Pittsburgh since January 2005 -- otherwise known as back when Bruce Pearl was coaching Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and long before every conversation about UT revolved around the NCAA investigation into its men's basketball program.

Honestly, that was the only bad thing about the win for Tennessee.

The Vols were so dominant from start to finish -- they led by 10 points eight minutes in, by 12 points at halftime and by 21 points midway through the second half -- that ESPN's Sean McDonough and Jay Bilas had plenty of time to drift away from the action on the court and discuss Pearl's acknowledged violations, which is never a good thing for Pearl. But it was a small price to pay for an overwhelming and resume-building win that will launch the Vols into the top five of the Top 25 (and one) when the rankings are updated late Sunday, and Hopson is a big reason why all this is happening.

He's been consistently good in Tennessee's past three games -- wins over Villanova, Middle Tennessee and Pittsburgh -- and made 21 of 33 field goal attempts while averaging 21.3 points. More impressively, he's just looked dominant. No blending in. No disappearing. Hopson is finally playing like the guy who belonged in the top 10 of the Class of 2008. And if he keeps this up, he'll join all those classmates in the NBA soon enough.

Y'all are always the dumbest, most unrealistic of the bunch. Have no idea what it's like to be a fan fan.

Unfortunately, i agree with you here.  You always have fans that think that since they are alumni and donors, that they are so much more a fan than others.  They have no real feeling for what its like to be a real fan.   To bleed the orange.  Im from knoxville as well, and yes I know our dumba$$ AD's name, the guy that hired Kiffin, which I hated, but supported nonetheless.  Yes i rooted for Kiffin while he was here.  But i also back up Mike Hamiltons decision although I not always agree.  Season ticket holder, whatever dude, you suck as a fan to come on a site and not back your team and coach.  YOU SUCK.  Plainly put.  And yes, people should leave Pearl alone.  He has taken enough crap for the past 3 months and will continue to do so when brought up for the remainder of his career probably. So get off his nuts and stop hatin.

You know what. The Vols suck three kinds of booty and still can't get enough. Y'all straw chewin hicks need to be boated up and shipped to freakin Ireland, Australia or some other uncivilized cuntry to be with like minded folk. I feel like getting a big stick and driving up to Hicksville and bustin the first ten rednex I see across the fn head with it. Then steal one of y'alls tractors(there probably three per household and running over aas many of you inbreds as I can before I go get drunkom your corn squeezins and bang that toothless old lady of yours in the mouth. Weird to get that brain from the brainless. Kind of ironic. Inbreds.

This is where you messed up.  Always have to have those types that have a stupid perspective of people down south.  I think its funny though as I have lived all over and met all types of people.  But you sound like a yankee.  What gets me is your a fan of Memphis bball.  St louis cardinals in basball, and the pittsburg steelers.  You sound like a a complete cumguzzler.  Very similar to your mother.  I bet she is from the south, as that is where she usually is.  VOLS obviously dont suck so you must be a little jealous that a team you hate from the south, the VOLS (same state as memphis by the way in case you left your edumacation somewhere in between st louis, pittsburg and memphis).  I wish you would bring your stupid trash talkin, no sense making, inbred mother, down south for us to smack around.  She's the one who is gonna take her teeth out, bend down on both knee's, and run the longest marathon known to man. A d!k sukin marathon!!!  On all the ole hicks and rednecks, especially the ones wiht no teeth (since they will have something in common)  So shut your mouth you freakn jew bag.  GO VOLS!!!

MJ-You might want to reconsider that visit.  You wouldn't last 5 seconds down south with your little stick ... we've got legal concealed carry down here.
PS - all your rich folks retire down here because where you live sucks out loud.  Do the math, if you can.

A coaches mistake shouldnt take away from the players that give 110% when out there playing for him, and the university.

Dumbest thing I have ever heard...Yes, yes, a coaches mistake should absolutely take away from the University that hired him. That is the whole idea. It's why penalties and probation exist in the world. The University is absolutely liable for the people that it hires to run its programs.

I just don't believe in a double standard based on success. Other coaches have lost their job over the same thing. If one of my players gets arrested I want him punished regardless of his talent. You do not sacrifice your morals to win ballgames. That being said I also agree that in this case Pearl should keep his job, but you're complaining that people are even still talking about it??? That is ridiculous.

No he did not just have a BBQ, he lied about it. I am an alumni, a donor, a season ticket holder and a lifelong fan, so there is no way you can get my Vol card from me. I am just not going to rationalize what is going on simply because he is UT's coach. If Calipari had done this at UK you would be going ballistic.

"You sir, should mind your talk about the VOLS if you are a fan."

?? So I am never allowed to question anything about UT sports? The athletic department is a mess right now, and part of that is the decisions we have made recently. Blind rationalization from a weak fan like yourself is part of the problem. I'm sure you loved the Lane Kiffin hire as well. And the amazing decisions going on in our baseball program. How do you feel about the job Mike Hamilton is doing? That is the name of our AD if you didnt know.

There are exceptions that depend on circumstances.  What he did was not all that bad.  Many coaches lie to the NCAA, just never get caught.  I never thought for a second that he should be fired.  Why fire him and bring in someone else that wont be as good, and still will have to lie and bribe recruits to come to TN over KY or FL.  He didnt bribe anyone with fancy cars or cash, simply had a BBQ.  I think he meant well in his deeds and Im sure he could have done worse.  He has already and still currently openly discusses his lies to whomever.  There comes a point when you have to leave it alone and that point is now.  A coaches mistake shouldnt take away from the players that give 110% when out there playing for him, and the university.  You sir, should mind your talk about the VOLS if you are a fan.  Give me your VOL card, its confiscated indefinitely!  GO VOLS!
