The Poll Attacks

Dave Mackall of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is a nice reporter, a great dude and, most importantly, a longtime friend. But his latest AP ballot is bogus, and I can't play favorites with the Poll Attacks, so here we go!

(Details of AP ballots courtesy of PollSpeak.com.)

Associated Press poll:  Dave has North Carolina 12th and Minnesota 25th this week despite the fact that UNC is 2-2 with zero notable wins while Minnesota is 5-0 with wins over West Virginia and ... wait for it ... UNC. Ranking North Carolina at all is mostly indefensible (more on this below in this UNC-heavy version of the Poll Attacks), but ranking the Tar Heels 13 spots ahead of Minnesota is insanity. Dave also has Illinois at No. 19 but Texas unranked even though UT just beat Illinois and played No. 5 Pittsburgh to the final minute, and he has San Diego State 10 spots below Gonzaga even though the Aztecs are 4-0 with a win ... wait for it ... at Gonzaga.

In other words, this was not a good week for my man Dave.

But, in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, he at least put Minnesota on his ballot somewhere.

Jason Franchuk from the Provo Daily Herald in Utah didn't even do that much.

He's the one AP voter who omitted Minnesota from his ballot, and I can't begin to imagine how or why. We can argue about whether the Gophers belong in the top 10 (which is where I have them) or closer to 15th (which is where the AP poll has them), but there is no denying they should be ranked. For whatever reason, Jason thinks otherwise. But he has North Carolina -- that 2-2 UNC team with no notable wins and a loss to Minnesota -- ranked 15th.

Coaches poll: You want to call me an idiot for trusting North Carolina and all that talent for the second straight season and ranking the Tar Heels sixth in the preseason Top 25 (and one), fine. I'll still be surprised if Roy Williams doesn't get this turned around and if Harrison Barnes doesn't prove to be great. But as it stands, I'm in no position to argue. So call me names if you desire.

But at least I'm not still ranking the Tar Heels!

I'm not stubborn to the point of being ridiculous.

Can't say the same for the men voting in the coaches poll.

Inexplicably, the coaches -- and the AP voters, as pointed out above -- kept UNC in their poll this week. The Tar Heels are 25th with 99 points. That's 79 more points than the Vanderbilt team that just beat them, 49 points more than the West Virginia team that beat the Vanderbilt team that just beat them, which is beyond stupid but perhaps not even the dumbest thing these coaches did this week.

Here's something dumber: New Mexico getting four points.

I've got no issues with somebody ranking New Mexico in the preseason. But what you can't do is rank New Mexico when the Lobos are coming off a 25-point loss to a Cal team picked to finish in the bottom half of the Pac-10. Similarly, you can't have Murray State on your ballot when the Racers have no quality wins to offset a 16-point loss to an Ole Miss team picked in the bottom half of the SEC, but some genius coach did that, too.

The Poll Attacks

Another barefoot and dumb Tenn fan. Wow you guys are something. Tenn hasn't beaten anyone. They barely escaped by 4 against Missouri State. How do you only beat a team with a 221 RPI by 4 AT HOME??? The idiots are those teams that feel they've been slighted when they've been elevated far higher than their results dictate. Louisville, West Virginia, UNLV, UCONN are all better teams and none of them are ranked. The Vols keep winning, but against who? No One, is who. If somehow they get past VCU, which they play at home, and should win, it will be the first team they beat close to the Top 100 RPI. Not that they are in the top 100, but they are close. Tenn has nothing to brag about yet this year. They are ranked because they apparently had a good recruiting class, nothing else. Can you explain why they should be ranked? Can you make an arguement? If you can, I'd love to hear it.

The Poll Attacks

Pitt runs the table and wins the 2k sports classic against Division I schools and they drop a spot in the polls?
I, for one, think Pitt is a great team...but your argument is pretty flawed.  If teams weren't supposed to drop until they lose, the preseason poll (which means next to nothing) would have way more influence on the season as a whole.

I like that voters, in general, judge teams on merit.  Yes, I'm an OSU homer, but you can't tell me that Pitt looked better winning games against Texas and Maryland than OSU did against Florida.  Florida may be overrated, but in my opinion they looked better than Pitt in a true road game.  If Pitt had done the same thing, I'd expect them to move in front of OSU.  I couldn't tell you who is better after 5 games, but so far, OSU has looked slightly more impressive than Pitt.  Unfortunately for Pitt, OSU looked as good as anybody this past week, and they just happened to be one spot behind Pitt in the polls.

The Poll Attacks

Wow, Vol fan you're on a roll with those Vols aren't you? Your Vols have beaten who??? They won a close game to Missouri State at home? That's a win to brag about. Missouri State with what a 221 RPI? Tenn beat them by 4, at home. This is the Missouri State team that lost to Tulsa by 12. Tulsa a team with a 273 RPI. What are you complaining about? You're ranked, you should feel lucky. At this point of the season with games against the aforementioned MoState, Belmont and Chattanooga Moc's, you complain as though Tenn has been slighted in some way.  Why is Tenn ranked? What have they done? Their margin of victory in these games with the cupcakes should be in the high double digits, 25-30 point minimum. The Vol's best win was against Chattanooga, the same Chattanooga who got beat by 41 by Louisville. Louisville fans have more to bitch about than any Tenn fan. Louisville isn't ranked. Go figure.

The Poll Attacks

So how does the voting work?  Cant they just get rid of that have no sense of voting?  I mean, my grandma could pick out the better team if one is 5-0 and the other 2-2.  And the 5-0 team has a win over the 2-2 team.  These voters should be fired and sent str8 to a basement to live for months.  Its ridiculous.  And ludacris.  And while all the top teams are winning by close margins, when my VOLS win close games we get kicked to the back of the pack.  Thats BS and we shall see where we stand after playing VCU, and hopefully making it to play Villanova.   Or then the voters will say we got lucky and Villinova will still be in the top 10 while VOLS are mid teens.  FIRE the voters and get new ones that have some sort of criteria for how they rank teams. Obviously, they have nothing now that helps determine it besides them saying, "oh, UNC has a top 10 class so lets rank them 6 even though they sucked real bad last yr."  But heaven forbid that my VOLS have a top 10 class but after losing 3 people off the team that went to the elite 8 they get kicked to the back.  I hate who makes the rankings and Gary, you should know better.  GO VOLS!

Mark Berman

GARY - I think you owe an apology to my man Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times. Remember him? The one you attacked for leaving UNC off his preseason ballot? I think you should be praising him for the prescience to leave UNC unranked coming into the season, which is where they clearly belong.

Poll Attacks Attacks Parrish

What Gary Parrish neglected to do this week is to attack both his own poll and the 'coaches' poll for dropping UT from 20 to 21 and 23 to 24 respectively when all the 3-0 Vols did is keep on winning. He's an idiot for dropping a team that keeps on winning, not for ranking UNC. But, he's definitely an idiot.

The Poll Attacks

You know the sad thing is that many AP polls voters dont watch all the games like many of us fans, and so when they vote they vote for the teams that had'nt lost a week ago, not yesterday.

I love College basketball and its a shame that more voters dont pay attention. I try to watch every game I can, and I'm certainly aware of all the scores of the day. I mean if I was an AP voter I'd be so honored to have a vote I'd have 5 games up online at once and 1 game on TV all day. I wish they just gave these AP votes to superfans and people like Gary, but then wheres the fun?

The Poll Attacks

And thats exactly why people outside of CBS don't talk about Gary Parrish's poll.  Its meant to be a conglomeration of many opinions not just 1 person, who can't possibly watch EVERY single game.
In any event, I enjoy reading the ranting.
