NCAA rules Memphis' Barton ineligible

Memphis officials learned Wednesday that the NCAA has ruled Will Barton ineligible to play as a freshman because of inconsistencies and issues regarding his academic background, a source close to the program told CBSSports.com.

Barton can appeal the ruling.

But the source described the appeal as a "longshot."

Another source told CBSSports.com the appeal has "no shot" because there are multiple academic issues facing Barton, the most heralded signee of the Tigers' celebrated recruiting class who attended three different high schools before spending a final prep year at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.

Barton hinted at bad news Wednesday night via his Twitter account.

"It don't get no worse than this," Barton Tweeted. "The hardest thing I ever had 2 face is here. Need vision cuz everything blurry now. Where do I go from here?"

The development is a massive blow to the Tigers and second-year coach Josh Pastner. MaxPreps.com ranked Barton 10th nationally in the Class of 2010, and Pastner had suggested to CBSSports.com in recent months that he expected the 6-foot-5 wing to be his leading scorer. What's next for Barton is unclear, provided the appeal is denied. He could immediately pursue a professional career, or remain at Memphis and try to earn eligibility for the 2011-12 season.

Feel bad for his immediate plan, not for his future. Trust me, this will be a mild speedbump on this kid's overall plan of getting to the next level. Next year at this time (if we live to see it), this kid will be a first round draft pick preparing himself for an NBA season...

Academics ?? Memphis - forget it

If someone wanted a real education they wouldn't pick Memphis .  Its a school for dumb jocks.  Why even make the pretense that they care?

If someone wanted a decent school in the midwest  - they could go to Indiana or just about any Big Ten school.  In the West they could pick Cal - but few could get accepted.

Well, this isn't good news in Tigertown, but it's better than the NCAA's Rose stance:  "Sure, let him play......ooops, didn't mean it, give me back that Final Four."

For the guy who says Memphis has no academic standards, I shall quote the Nature Boy Ric Flair:  "My shoes cost more than your house.....WOOOOO!!!"

Sincerely,
Class of '91 Alum.

Can you deny anything I've said? Where as your comment is based on rumor and it is libel on the part of the newspaper.  I'm don't like saying all those things but when someone repeats rumor as fact it does hit a nerve.  Can you back up any thing you've said? Of course you can't. Your just another hater behind a keyboard.  Go Cats!!!

Oh, they're keeping track now...?

I was always told that Memphis didn't have any academics.  When did that change?

Whos willing to bet Kanter doesnt make as much money in the Euro league as Uk has offered Anthony Davies?

You have your own problems pink pigeon.  Pitino 15 secs+Sypher= embarresment, little ricky leaving, recruiting falters, first round bounce out, samuals frustrated leaves. Players tased arrested, beating up girlfriend's daddy, and you got a crummy football team.  So mind you own bussiness.
Of course I know you want take my advice but its worth a try. lol.
