Wake Forest is nearing a deal that could make Colorado's Jeff Bzdelik the Demon Deacons' next men's basketball coach, multiple sources told on Friday.

One source described the situation as "all but done."

Another said "it's close but not quite there yet."

Bzdelik is a former NBA coach who has been at Colorado the past three seasons.

Matt-gowake, I live in North Carolina and fairly close to Winston-Salem so I in fact did watch a lot of Wake basketball this season.  They did look shaky at times but they did win a lot of games and made the tournament. Dino might not have been the greatest in-game coach but I don't think that they are upgrading by firing him and hiring a coach from a bottom-dweller Big 12 school.  That doesn't seem to make any sense in my eyes.  Gaudio was a pretty good coach who was given absolutely no time to prove himself.  Wake should have given him one more year.  I think he could have done great things with Wake this year with the players he has coming back and the stellar recruiting class he has coming in.

Here's the main reason why Coach Bzdelik is going to get the job. He and AD Ron Wellman are really good friends. They have worked together before, and keep in contact to this day. And to top that off, his daughter goes to Wake Forest. This is a classic case of who you know, not what you've accomplished.''

Don't get me wrong, I think Coach Bzdelik is a good coach, but I don't think he is worthy of the Wake job. But hey if they are going to give him the chance, let's see what he does. You never know. Good Luck Coach.

i havent read any posts but im betting ppl are smashing bdzelik . His record doesnt say it all. I usually see 5 colorado games a year and his coaching ability along with how he has his players attention is really good. I think being at wake forest will do even better for him.. i say that because Colorado doesnt get the best of recruits but the ACC is probably a better sell as far as Basketball, and Wake has a little better history in basketball. The guy is a great leader and Kids wanna play hard for him day in and day out. Wake will be very successful with him. They are NOT making a mistakeonce they hire him.

I have to agree with the minority posters here. Bzdelik doesn't look good on paper but Gaudio didn't look much like a coach on the sidelines either. The guy deserves a chance, he's a solid x's and o's, plays Princeton style with more uptempo. Has some NBA experience which will be a good selling point. Coaching on Tobacco Road instead of a Mormon region will definitely make it an easier job for Bzdelik than staying in Boulder.

A thing that had to hurt Gaudio is his great recruiting was leading to 1 and done's, 2 and done's with not enough success to justify it. Give the credit to the AD for making a proactive move rather than a late reactive one.

Case in point, look at the last 3 champions. Kansas, UNC and Duke. What was the common trait of those teams? Their best players were UPPERCLASSMEN!  We all laugh at the "student athlete" term, but the results are showing it, "student athletes" win championships.

dukefan704, you and many of these responders must not have watched too much Wake basketball the last few years.  There is no justification in criticizing decisions if you are not knowledgeable in your opinion.  Yes Gaudio had a good record, yes he was a good recruiter.  However, Wake players did not play hard, there was no discipline, and we have been one of the worst coached teams in the country the past 3 years.  Just to give you a little glimpse into the coaching at Wake under Gaudio...take his last victory-Texas in OT during the first round of the NCAA tourney.
- A little over a minute to go, LD Williams attempts a full court pass after grabbing a rebound and we turn the ball over
- With less than 20 seconds left (after a timeout) we are up 3 and LD Williams (a senior) travels while throwing in the ball.  In the huddle, Gaudio should make sure LD knows not to move due to the dead ball situation
- After Texas misses a free throw with 10 seconds left, with a timeout remaining, LD brings up the ball is a histerical mess and loses the ball just after getting over half court

We win in overtime on a last second miracle to give Gaudio his first postseason win in his 3 years of coaching.

These types of occurances have been going on for far too long.  We are ahead by 10 with 3 minutes left and take 3 pointers early in the shot clock, we don't hussel after lose balls, we don't block out.  Yes we have had multiple first round NBA draft picks and lots of talent but it has translated to 1!!!! postseason tournament victory including huge defeats in the ACC tournament each year.

Anyone would be an upgrade over Dino Gaudio.  He doesn't coach effort or heart and it is apparent in the way we play on a nightly basis.  If anyone plays a zone defense on us, we dribble the ball for 30 seconds of the shot clock and force an ill-adviced shot.  I could go on and go for days.  A "mediocre at best" coach is better than Gaudio, but this coach (assuming he is hired) has had success in a difficult situation at Colorado and had a great team at Air Force.

These are not stupid decisions by Wake Forest...maybe you should watch a little more basketball before making ignorant comments about teams

How in the world is this an upgrade from Dino Gaudio???????????  Wake is making some awful decisions.  I thought that if they gave gaudio 2 more years he would have them contending deep into the NCAA Tournament.  But instead they're going to hire a mediocre at best coach who won't do ANYTHING in the ACC.  These decisions are some stupid ones by wake forest.

Bzdelic was actually showing pretty consistent improvement at a very difficult school to succeed at.

Who did you think Wake was going to get, anyway?  On the plus side, it's a basketball school.  On the downside, it's another school where the expectations don't match the history.  It's the fourth most popular school in its state.  They just fired a successful, but not successful enough, coach.  That's not the most enticing situation for another coach to come into.

What they would find in Bzdelic is a coach who is building a record of increasing success in a major conference.  The only realistic and probably equivalent alternative might be to find a coach who has already built a record of success in a minor conference.  I think either of these are better than hiring a well thought of assistant from a major program.  But honestly, I don't think Wake can get anyone with a better background than those three alternatives.

Go to hell

And yes, I'm pissed about this because I thought we would be able to win a lot of big games next year with Higgins being a senior and Burks entering his sophomore season

Hahahahaha, this is the funniest post I have read in months.  If you really thought you were going to be winning games anytime soon you are wrong, but hey thanks for the laugh.

The criticism of Bzdelik is ridiculous.  You guys obviously don't understand that the Air Force and Colorado basketball programs are terrible.  Bzdelik basically had to start over at Colorado and was slowly building a program that fit his criteria.  I think he was headed in the right direction.  I think he will be able to do great things at Wake Forest and he will have a stronger crop of recruits to choose from than he has here in Colorado and surrounding area.  Thats a fact!
