USC hoops punished for not being USC football

One of the best Pac-10 teams won't play in the Pac-10 tournament.

Or the NCAA tournament.

So yeah, Southern California absolutely hammered itself Sunday by announcing self-imposed sanctions that'll put a ceiling on what Kevin O'Neill's first team can accomplish. And if you're one of those -- like Tim Floyd, for instance -- who always thought USC would sacrifice the basketball program in an attempt to protect the football program, well, you now have your proof, which is why it's difficult to applaud athletic director Mike Garrett, who released a statement Sunday that included the following phrase: "When we've done something wrong, we have an obligation to do something about it, and that is exactly what we are doing here."

Really?

Then when will USC do something about Reggie Bush?

The investigation into Bush began in April 2006.

That's more than three years ago, and still nothing despite overwhelming evidence of improprieties. Meantime, Joe McKnight decided to start driving a Land Rover registered to a man who the L.A. Times reported registered a company called "USC Marketing," and is it any surprise that McKnight initially said he spoke to Bush before choosing USC over LSU out of high school? I can only imagine the details of that alleged conversation, but I'd bet my right arm that the words "extra" and "benefit" were included in some form.

Either way, the whole thing is a laughable mess.

And guess who pays the price?

The basketball program, that's who.

And, so far, it's only the basketball program, which is both shameful and transparent.

just shut up you old dumbass.

1) You probably don't even have a degree from USC, let alone college
2) You can't even write one single coherent sentence, which reinforces 1)
3) Talking about cheating.........hmm how's USC doing in that category? Football and now basketball. At least the Bruins have the brains to not admit guys like Mayo and Sidney, unlike you morons at south central.

4) Inferiority complex much? People like you make my day sometimes. Go get a degree and then come back talk shit, idiot. = )

USC hoops punished for not being USC football

There are more than rumors within the NCAA that USC will be found to have lost institutional control over its athletics program.  The Bush case has been delayed by the civil lawsuits surrounding it, not by NCAA's general ineptitude and fear.  But these lawsuits are now fast coming to a close.  USC admits to the basketball problems.  It is not whether the NCAA sanctions will happen, they will.  Sooner rather than later.  Bigger rather than smaller.  For friends or foes, this is a done deal.

"When will you all get it ? Reggie Bush will still NOT talk to the NCAA and I hate to tell you all but he did NOT break the law so this should show everyone that if you don't talk there is no way they can prove anything. And with Bush this was someone who wanted him to leave school not the school trying to get him to stay ! So you will ALL have to live with the fact nothing is going to happen to the Football program as long as people wot't talk."

Umm...Derrick Rose never talked and yet the whack NCAA still made the implication that he cheated on his SAT.

Feel free to share the facts and try to dispute the difference.

The only difference is that the NCAA doesn't want to punish the L.A. market in college football.  Without USC, it is probable that most college football fans would forget about the PAC-10 and the other West Coast teams.

That's ok.  Texas still has wins over Michigan State and North Carolina.  USC is small potatoes compared to those two wins.

So, when does the normally fast acting NCAA, finally do something about Reggie Bush taking a half $mil in illegal benifits from an agent / booster while playing for USC?

The NCAA usually conducts these investigations in less than 4 months, before stating sanctions and penalties, for USC it is 4 years and counting. What is the holdup? This stinks to high heaven.

Double standard??????

Preferential treatment????

Bush will be retired before the NCAA finally does the right thing on this whole tawdry mess.

Congrats to USCFANNV!!

Congrats goes to USCFANNV for being the BIGGEST MORON POSTER OF THE DAY!!!

It was a close battle, as there have been a number of Kentucky fans who have wrote of merits of John Calipari and his white as snow past record in terms of recruiting and his "accomplishments" of having not one, but two Final Fours stripped!  Repeat after me UK apologists...John Calipari never had sex with that...er, I mean never committed a single infraction!

However, congrats USCFANNV, you win the prize for your moronic post that shamelessly defended the actions of the USC program with the classic..."The Bush deal ia a way different deal. get real. it was a off-campus 120 miles from USC." Awesome dude.  Besides the killer use of grammar, your use of geographical proximity as an excuse for a player getting extra benefits was truly good stuff!!! Beyond that, you did the classic, "lets take a extra moment to bash our current President on a sports board" quote.  Nice! Extra points and was the kicker for me in granting you this cerished award!  Good job brother.  You have made excuse makers and apologists from South-Central to Foxboro proud!!!

At least when we know a coach was wrong and involved, we punish the school and team; unlike the Cubbies across town, who cheated for ten phoney titles. My school chum , Paul Westphal played it straight as he would always do. 26-2, and we couldnt get in, because of Wooden/Gilbert cheats!
Sure. USC is punishing themselves because they had a dumb head coach who most likely personally delivered the money, while leaving breadcrumbs all along the way to track the trail. In this day and age, they had no choice but to punish themselves. Otherwise, the NCAA was going to be harsher.

You're bring up 30+ year old stuff that everyone knows to compare to this situation? Weak argument. But even then Wooden was smart enough to never get implicated and the UCLA uber-booster Sam "Papa Sam" Gilbert was doing it because he loved the university and the team. For UCLA, it wasn't until 1981 until probation came calling. Way ahead of their time. In fact, Time magazine wrote an article in 1974 about Sam and his connections to the team. That just shows you it was a different era.

The moral of the story is don't go ghetto if you're going to cheat. USC did that by using some stupid street agent, with dollar signs in his eyes. Of course they got busted!

Anyone think Parrish looks kinda gay?

What's with the gay hair?  I mean, its OK if you're if you're still in high school or college.  But Dude looks 30 something.  Is this supposed to help him pick up on the D&B waitresses (or waiters)?   Steve McNair didn't need the gay hairstyle.  Parr
ish even has the gay black blazer jacket to go with it.  How original.  And now we are supposed to care what he thinks about sports issues?  You can clearly tell from his picture the guy was never an athlete.  He has no sports insight whatsoever to offer.
