The Poll Attacks

OKLAHOMA CITY -- That voter from Georgia did it again.

So I busted him up again.

It's an extra special Christmas edition of the Poll Attacks .

AP poll: Did you read the past two Poll Attacks? If not, click here and here . If so, you already know how frustrated I am with Roger Clarkson of the Athens Banner-Herald. He is equal parts ridiculousness and stubbornness, proof being how he keeps ranking Pittsburgh even though I've spent two weeks explaining why it's stupid to rank Pittsburgh.

But that's not all.

Roger's ballot is dumb on lots of levels.

I'll break it down for you.

Hopefully, he'll print this out and keep it so we can avoid this next week.

1. Roger has Pitt ranked 25th despite Pitt having no good wins and a loss to Indiana, and, as I've pointed out before, it's not like Pitt was supposed to be good. Jamie Dixon lost nearly everything from last season. So this team wasn't supposed to be good, and it hasn't done anything to make anybody think it's good. Except Roger. He still believes. But it's possible he has no idea that DeJuan Blair is a Spur.

2. Roger has Ohio State ranked 10th even though Evan Turner has a broken back. Meantime, Roger has North Carolina (which pounded Ohio State) ranked 12th, i.e., two spots behind the Buckeyes. And he doesn't have Butler ranked at all even though Butler also beat the Buckeyes.

3. Roger has Tennessee ranked 13th. I'll explain why that's stupid a little later.

4. Roger has Georgia Tech ranked 19th, which is exactly where he had Georgia Tech last week. That means he didn't care that Georgia Tech lost Sunday at home to Florida State, because he didn't drop the Yellow Jackets. Meantime, he left Florida State unranked even though FSU is 10-2 with no bad losses and a win over Georgia Tech. He also left Dayton unranked even though Dayton is 8-2 with no bad losses and a win over Georgia Tech. So to recap, Roger ranked Georgia Tech 19th even though Georgia Tech has no good wins and losses to Florida State and Dayton, but he did not rank Florida State or Dayton even though Florida State and Dayton have both beaten Georgia Tech, which, again, Roger ranked 19th.

5. Roger has Texas A&M ranked 15th and New Mexico ranked 22nd even though New Mexico is 12-0 with a win over Texas A&M in Texas. Seriously, somebody please help this man. It's Christmas, for crying out loud. This isn't fun for anybody.

Coaches poll: I dropped Tennessee completely out of the Top 25 (and one).

Some of you have asked why.

My response: Why not?

Tennessee is 8-2 with zero good wins. The Vols barely beat DePaul, and DePaul stinks. USC ran UT off the court, and though the Trojans are probably better, thanks to the addition of Michael Gerrity, than most realize, you can't let a team picked next-to-last in the terrible Pac-10 run you off the court. The best thing UT has done this season is play Purdue close. Beyond that, nothing. So I have no idea how the coaches can justify putting Bruce Pearl's team at No. 14.

It can't be because Vols deserve the benefit of the doubt because, you know, they don't. Lest we forget this is basically the same roster that underachieved last season, basically the same roster that finished 21-13. Tennessee struggled pretty much all last season, and the Vols didn't add an impact player. So is it really a surprise that they're struggling again this season?

To be clear, I still believe this UT team has potential.

I still think the Vols could finish second in the SEC East.

I might even pick them to hand Kansas its first loss on Jan. 10.

But at some point, you are what you are, and what Tennessee is and has been dating back to last season is a talented bunch that can't meet the expectations many of us have placed upon them. Until they do, they should be ranked accordingly. And by ranked accordingly, I mean not ranked at all.

The Poll Attacks

Gary, when, just when is Purdue going to leapfrog into the top 2? They are ahead of Kentucky in every computer rating system, RPI, Saragin, Ken Pom. They play solid defense. They are in the top 50 in the least turnover teams. Kentucky is just outside the top 50 in the most turnovers. Wall had his big game, but now has at least 5 games with 5 or more turnovers. Purdue's scoring is more balanced. It's true that they don't have an outstanding for sure NBA 1st rounder, but Moore, Johnson, and Hummel are talented. I know that they lack a true point guard, but it's better than having an all freshman backcourt that at times looks as good as any, and other times daised and confused. Purdue has beaten better teams than Kentucky. NC is not the ussual NC, they will be lucky to finish in the top 3 in the ACC. UConn is about the 4th to 5th best team in the Big East, granted the Big East is tough. Purdue beat Wake Forest, which is coming together as a team nicely, and they are 12-2. They beat Alabama at Alabama, and they are 10-4. They just beat the pants off of West Virginia. WV couldn't stop Johnson. So, when does the #4 team beating the #6 team not improve the #4 teams standing? They just beat Minnesota last night. They beat Tennesee with all of their players on a neutral court. They have 3 top 25 wins, and in all honesty, Wake Forest should be ranked, and NC should drop off or drop to the bottom of the top 25.

The Poll Attacks

I honestly can't believe Georgia Tech is still ranked in the coaches poll.  Here I thought another loss would finally end the madness, but its idiots like Clarkson that keep voting for teams despite them doing absolutely nothing to deserve it.

The RPI is not a top 25 ranking and it wasn't invented by CBS they just report it.

The RPI ranking was never intended to be a top 25 ranking and is still not.  Also CBS didn't invent the RPI they just report it.

Why does he have a vote in the basketball polls?
I think that's the point of the whole "Poll Attack" articles.

Votes need to go to people who actually pay attention to college basketball ... more so than just looking at someone else's Top 25 and making-up your own.

Give me the damned vote. I'll give Kentukcy another #1 vote like it deserves. I know, I know ... there's a million reasons why Kansas is No. 1 and why Texas should be ranked second, but when it's this early in the game with as many unproven teams out there still surviving off preseason (and cupcake) hype, then it should be anybody's game. I'm not saying UK SHOULD be No. 1, but Certainly it should be a close vote between Kansas, Texas, Syracuse, Purdue and Kentucky.

GT might beat Dayton 6,7 8 even 9 times in 10 - but they didn't beat them the one time that mattered. Dayton is inconsistent, often poor- shooting,  not always sound in judgment but they have got talent and they play tough D. They are a top 40 team. If they beat New Mexico, maybe more than that.

The Poll Attacks

It's all meaningless anyway. That's why we have a tournament. Why spend the energy ragging on some lowly writer out in the sticks? I'm pulling for my Jayhawks, so as long as he gets that vote right, if he wants to rank the "Sisters of Mercy" that's fine with me.

The Poll Attacks

Maybe someone needs to make sure he's still breathing.

Maybe some slack jaw is sending in picks on his behalf with Roger's body stuffed in a smelly closet.

How else can you explain some of this...

Of course, there's so much stupidity in all polls, it would be more than impossible to get these knuckleheads all under control at once.

OK. I'll buy your Pitt and Tenn argument. But I'm still having trouble with the AP's fetish with Gonzaga, and stubbornly refusing to drop them, even after getting folded, spindled, and mutilated with extreme prejudice by Duke. They also lost to an unranked Wake Forest team. Their only "quality" win, if you can call it that, was a win over unranked Wisconsin. Yet they're still hanging around, and if they win this week, the AP will be vaulting them up the ladder again. I/m not so sure that they could beat either Pitt or Tenn on the road.
