Charlie Coles finds your question absurd

Charlie Coles' Miami University RedHawks led Kentucky much of Monday night but lost 72-70 when John Wall buried a jumper in the final second. I've blogged about it already. It was a hell of a game, a tremendous effort. And it led to a hilarious exchange when a Kentucky radio host named Dick Gabriel asked Coles the following question: "How did this one get away from you?"

Keep in mind, John Calipari's Wildcats are a popular pick to make the Final Four.

Meantime, the RedHawks were picked fourth in the preseason MAC East Division Preseason Media Poll.

Now enjoy the quote.

"I can't believe you asked that question; I really can't believe it," Coles said. "Let me see here. Kentucky Wildcats. No. 4 in the country. I'm hearing four first-round draft choices. And you're asking me how that got away from me ? Why don't you ask John why it was so close?"

Hahahahahahahaha!

"They're the Big Blue. You ought to know that," Coles continued. "I'm not mad at you. But where have you been? And where are you from, sir?"

Gabriel then told Coles he's from Lexington.

"You're from Lexington?" Coles said. "Oh, my Lord. How did it get away from me ?"

(Here's a link to the audio. The classic exchange is the third question.)

I've liked Coles for a long time...glad to see he's still in fine fettle when asked a Big Blue turd of a question!

His teams are usually scrappers with a fair amount of talent, but usually not top of the pile...

Way to give 'em a game Charlie! I was hoping you could pull it off, to put a little chill on all of this hype surrounding an upgraded NIT team, and a bunch of talented freshmen....

They'll be good, but they've got some tough lessons coming...

John Wall better watch his chest pumping or he's going to get a technical. This isn't AAU ball!

Upgraded NIT team?  Funny how you Jayhawk fans can classify a team with the most NCAA tournament appearances and most NCAA tournament wins as a NIT team because they happen to miss the tourney one year out of the last 17.  I can't count the number of times your choking azz team has ruined my bracket over the last couple decades. P.S.  They did let it get away, they had several unforced turnovers late in the game against, as you call them, a upgraded NIT team with a bunch of talented freshmen.  If that's all they are then it was a valid question:)

Charlie Coles finds your question absurd

At a non-conference game at Illinois a couple of years ago, which the RedHawks won in overtime, I was standing in the Crush next to the Miami bench and we were teasing Coach Coles about the yellow paper on which he had written some game notes. During a dead ball in the second half, Coles walked over to us, pretended like he was sort of looking for someone among us, and asked in a funny voice "is this the cruuuuuush?" The way he said it was very funny. He handled it all with a smile. I have rooted for him ever since.

Yeah, and Kentucky just wasnt relevant in any bracket?  Dude this team has not won anything n past 10 years, and in the last 25 years the have been in decline, thats why North Carolina and Kansas are so close in wins now.  Kentucky has slowly paced thier way to 2000 wins.  North Carolina can talk because they continue to win National Championships and post 30 win seasons.

I cant count how many times Kansas has beaten the Wildcats and blown them out in last decade.

SANCTIONS BABY.

Just remember Coach Cal has never won a National Championship, and until he does the right away and doenst get it stripped no one cares how Kentucky does, because its one big CHEAT.  Someone said it best after last night.  All Kentucky fans claimed "best team in the country", now its Were "Good" but "inexperienced"  Which one is it?  Make up your mind Kentcuky?

bluegray213, you said UK has been in decline for the last 25 years.  If you have even been alive that long, you would know that they have won two championships in that time and lost another one in overtime.  How many other teams "in decline" or otherwise have done that?  The only other teams that have done as well or better are the other top teams that are right up there with UK which are KU, Duke and UNC.

That audio was gut busting funny!  It reminded me of listing to an old Andy Griffith audio explaining his first football game!

Two National Titles, one National Runner Up, Several Final Four and Elite 8 appearances, the Team of the 90's, and we are in slow decline? I fail to see how. But, what I DO fondly remember is something about Kansas being in trouble during that time as well, sometime after your coach left, after winning it in 1988????? Pot meet kettle.

Now, to clarify one of your MAJOR misconceptions.....Coach Cal has never cheated. Therefore, your claim for sanctions is invalid. There is no reason to believe that he would cause Kentucky any harm. Truth is, the Final Fours that were vacated were for things OUTSIDE OF HIS CONTROL. Did he arrange for an agent to give gifts to Marcu Camby??? No. Did he have anything to do with Derrick Rose's SAT??? No. Facts are facts....yes, Final Fours were vacated, but according to the NCAA, it was not related to anything Coach Cal did.

Now for reality.....yes, Kentucky should have probably lost. But, they didn't. Miami played a solid game, and made 15 of 28 threes. Several of those shots were contested, but Miami had a hot hand. Kentucky played rather poorly at times, just as Coach Cal said they would. But, reality is that Kentucky WILL get better....that's why they play 30+ games. Come March, they will be one of the best teams in the country.
