This sure is a crazy story

To recap ...

Rick Pitino had sex with a woman at a restaurant.

Then she got pregnant.

Then he paid for her to have an abortion.

Then she married one of his friends.

Then she tried to extort money from Pitino.

Then she accused him of rape.

And, man, is this a bizarre story or what?

I'm not sure whether the lesson is to be faithful to your wife or fearful of crazy women, but there's a lesson in there somewhere, I'm certain. And what's up with this Tim Sypher character? How can you marry a woman six months after she had an abortion due to your boss getting her pregnant? Isn't that a bit weird? Unless, of course, he was under orders from Pitino, who might've figured the best way to keep this woman quiet was to have his friend marry her.

You know, keep your friends close and affairs closer.

(Or something like that.)

I guess I could be serious about all this, but, really, what's the point? It's such a strange situation on a lot of different levels, and the only people I can muster any sympathy for are Pitino's wife, Joanne, and his children -- particularly Richard Pitino, who was on the Louisville staff until this offseason and thus in the middle of a circus where he almost certainly found himself torn between being loyal to his boss and angry at his father.

Karen Sypher?

She's obviously loony .

Tim Sypher?

I don't get him at all.

Rick Pitino?

He's a helluva basketball coach, but he got himself into a mess that's impossible to defend.

Me?

I'm just sitting here shaking my head, mezmerized by the soap opera.

(PS: I wrote a column when this all started, and my central point was that no matter how the story ended, it wouldn't end well for anybody. Considering Pitino has been forced to admit to an affair and an abortion, and that Sypher is facing criminal charges, I think I was right in my assumption. Either way, you can read that column at this link , if you want.)

This sure is a crazy story

Without a doubt, quite the crazy story. Two questions, please, that beg answers:

1. How will this affect Pitino's employment?

2. Should this affect Pitino's employment, or is moral character for those in a position of leadership over young men not important anymore?

I have another question. Why don't these idiots use condoms????  Jesus. Especially Pitino, who has been in the pros, know that if you have unprotected sex with a woman she's going to get pregnant, and then fasten on you for child support payments for life. If you want to cheat on your wife, get a vasectomy for God's sake!

This sure is a crazy story

He's Catholic.  Doesn't believe in contraceptives.  ;)

Also...I think it's funny that Pat Forde over at ESPN isn't mentioning much about this.  He never really has either.  Of course, when Cal was hired at UK, he was all over the news talking about how much of a sleezeball Cal was, but now that this has come out about Pitino, no one has heard from him.  Could it be that he's got a book deal with the Filthy Card coach?!?!  Sounds like a conflict of interest to me.

This sure is a crazy story

I always feel like these type of stories are hardly sport worthy. Pitino has enough on his plate for us to talk about than his personal life.
I like Louisville this year.
Look out for freshman Peyton Siva from here and Washington...

This sure is a crazy story

There's nothing crazy about it. It is normal behavior in a world where right has become wrong and wrong has become right. The only reason this is of any interest is that a prominent person is involved. This story otherwise wouldn't make the local news.

Maybe if he was mindful enough to think about using a condom he probably would not have cheated on his wife in the first place.

This sure is a crazy story

Pitino is a jackass and has been since his days as head coach the the Univ. of Kentucky. I have no doubt there are many other Karen Syphers in his past ... his luck finally ran out with this one and the truth is finally coming out about what kind of a person he really is.

This sure is a crazy story

At this juncture, I doubt that anyone can make any legitimate assumptions other than what both have confirmed. A sexaul liasion took place.
From there, it's anyone's guess. Did this woman, in fact, become pregnant? Was it, in fact, Pitino's responsibility? If there was a forced sexual situation, why would she get involved and marry someone who would, by association, force her to be in close proximity to her alleged rapist? Why wait all this time for this to come to public awareness?
Outside of the fact that this is Kentucky, home to grade school thinking in the matters of religion and women's rights vs abortion. (We have a Creation Museum here that teaches Creationism as science- go figure), I would think this would blow over.
The fact that it involves basketball, Kentucky's second largest religion, may help it blow over anyway. However, this will a situation that continues to haunt Pitino not only this year, but in recruiting and p.r. in general.
My thoughts? Well, they've both agreed that the sex occurred. Outside of that, from what we've been able to see of this woman in the press and on TV, she seems entirely untrustworthy. I think she decided to try to cash in on infomation that she knew that Pitino would want to keep quiet.
She made the decision to have an abortion, which was her decision to make (and PLEASE, let's follow the established laws of the land on this one, not get into the "they murdered a baby". Conservatives call for murder every day through supporting war, capital punishment and a lack of gun control).
One would think that would have been a closed case. They did something. He asked her what she wanted to do, she decided, he complied, and now, she decides to ask for millions of dollars in hush money. That is extortion and she should be charged for that act.
It's that simple.
This is a private situation that did not occue on the University's grounds and has nothing to do with his employment. I'm sure we'll continue to hear about morality, despite the reported over 50% divorce rate and supposed 65% affair rate (must all be liberals, right? Well, except for Larry Craig, Governor Sanford, Jimmy Swaggert, et. al.) and see signs in arenas and hear chants. However, nothing has happened that should interferes with this man having a position at U of L and trying to be as successful as possible, which, to date, he has been very much so.

This sure is a crazy story

I have always thought that personal lives should stay personal, hence the word personal. But big name people seem to have different boundries when it comes to this. Personally i could give less if hes banging somebody else. i just wanna see results on the court. Look we all got ghosts in our closets and i and many ppl have been in similar aituations, just watch maury for an hour. his job as coach should be fine as i see what he did as being of personal nature. It wasnt like he told all the players " hey watch the news for my mistake i made and join in". Im sure hes addressed the team and told them not to make same mistake. but either way, personal should stay personal....
