D-Will's presence in Vegas is boost to Illini

LAS VEGAS -- One of the notable assistant-coaching hires in recent years was Bruce Weber's decision to lure former Illinois point guard Jerrance Howard from Kentucky and put him on the road for his alma mater. The move has transformed (and is still transforming) the Illini program from a talent perspective, and now Howard, 29, is considered among the nation's best young assistants thanks to his engaging personality and work on the recruiting trail.

This week, Howard is out here putting in more work.

As is Deron Williams.

Williams spoke at USA Basketball's minicamp on Wednesday, but the former Illini star (and current member of the Utah Jazz) has also found time to pop into a few gyms and make sure the Illinois recruits see him. As trivial as it might seem, trust me, this kind of stuff makes an impact on high school prospects. And though it's possible Williams would be doing it regardless, it would be wrong not to mention that he and Howard were college teammates who remain close friends.

So add that to the list of reasons why Bruce Weber's decision to hire Jerrance Howard was brilliant.

It's a small reason on a big list.

But it matters.

And it helps.

1) This was a great hire that literaly rejuinated the Illinois program. The incoming freshman class is excellent and so is the Class of 2010. So, obviously the Eric Gordon situaton didn't hurt things. There are plenty of stars in both of those classes.

2) Why are some Kentucky fans happy to be associated with World Wide Wes? He's a cancer and really doesn't do much good to college basketball, let alone the AAU and High School scene.
