Memphis loses recruit

Posted on: July 21, 2009 1:56 pm

Memphis signee Latavious Williams has decided to bypass college and pursue a professional career overseas, according to a statement released Tuesday morning.

"It was a difficult decision," Williams said in the statement. "But after consulting with a number of people, and taking my family situation into consideration, playing overseas is the best move for me."

Rivals.com ranked Williams as the 17th-best prospect in the Class of 2010, and he was the first elite recruit Memphis landed after John Calipari's departure. Still, whether the 6-foot-8 forward would ever actually play for the Tigers has long been in question because of questionable academics. And though the Memphis staff was optimistic, most industry sources familiar with Williams' transcript were highly skeptical he'd ever be cleared.

Either way, it doesn't matter now.

Memphis will be fine.  We all knew this was going to be a rebuilding year, and most people didn't expect him to qualify anyway.

The trend hurts the NCAA because it has (Jennings) and will continue to take stars away from college basketball. Sure we all watch when our teams are playing, but what draws us to other games? The networks potentially lose ratings every time a kid decides to go overseas.

Saying that today's player needs publicity to get drafted is especially asinine now as the league has scouts everywhere. If he is good he will play. Jennings stock dropped because several PGs stepped their game up last year.

Typical story, another dumb jock with a funny name can't cut the mustard with college academics and takes the best available option that doesn't require any brain power.

Have to agree with your prediction, but if ya ain't able to qualify at a public, state university, you're probably not the brightest bulb on the tree anyway. That being said, he did seem smarter than Eric Bledsoe, though =)
