Rose responds to gang photo, still mum on SAT

Derrick Rose issued a written statement in response to a picture circulating that shows him flashing a gang sign, but he still hasn't said anything about the NCAA's allegation that he didn't take his own SAT. In other words, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year doesn't seem to care if you think he committed academic fraud, but he will not have the world under the impression that he associates with gangs.

"Recently, a photo has been circulating on the Internet which appears to depict me flashing a gang sign," Rose said in the statement. "This photo of me was taken at a party I attended in Memphis while I was in school there, and was meant as a joke ... a bad one, I now admit."

A bad one, I now admit?

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Trust me, there is NO WAY Derrick Rose wrote that sentence.

So we now know he neither takes his own standardized tests nor authors his own statements.

"I want to emphatically state, now and forever, that Derrick Rose is anti-gang, anti-drug, and anti-violence," the statement continued. "I am not, nor have I ever been, affiliated with any gang and I can't speak loudly enough against gang violence, and the things that gangs represent. In posing for this picture, I am guilty of being young, naive and of using extremely poor judgment. I sincerely apologize to all my fans for my mistake. I pride myself on being a good citizen, and role model, that young people can look up to and I want to urge all my young fans to stay away from gangs and gang-related activities."

That's the statement in its entirety.

It is 161 words.

And though I personally like Derrick Rose and have always found him to be pleasant, if he could really construct sentences like that there would've been no reason for him to have somebody else take his SAT. Far as I'm concerned, that statement about the gang sign is an admission of guilt on the SAT allegation ... an obvious one, I must admit.

BlueChristmas, you are so right.  Unless Jesus Christ himself is posting on these comment boards, I seriously doubt there is anyone here who hasn't done something they wouldn't want their own parents to see, let alone see it plastered in full color all over the internet.

Leave D-Rose alone!  He's a good kid who did something silly one night.  If he were not a superstar basketball player, no one would give a rip.

Okay Guys,...First of all I don't believe in gang activity or breaking of the law.  Let's be realistic,...How many of you have never done something that you should not have?  I see one hand,...can I get two?  My point is society as we know it right now has created a lifestyle that many young people want to feel connected with. Does not make it right but look at the music and the athelets that are making millions of dollars. So unfortunately you mix that with youth and this is what we have.  A group of kids who want to make millions so they automatically think that if they immitate these guys they are on their way to be famous.  It' like being good is bad,....and being bad is good.  Then how many of us have broken a law?  You just haven't gotten caught.  Then whatever these guys do is going to be magnifed because of who they are.  It's it right? No!  For GR82bA10Acvol,  I guess you have NEVER done something wrong! Derrick was in college.  He was all of 18.  Stupid yes,... a criminal I'd say no!

All his problems (SAT, photo, 100+mph speeding) all stem to the time before he was a member of the Bulls.  Hopefully all these situations are a thing of the past.

Please tell us how you know that Derrick was "stoned out of his gourd."   I'm sure many of us would like to know.  The fact is that this kid has never been in trouble with the police, is a favorite of his teammates because of his modest demeanor, and numerous sports writers have said he is a pleasure to deal with.  If you'll remember, the NCAA did testing on the Memphis team during the tournament that year, and nothing came back about Derrick Rose.

Being a Memphis fan, I have read a great deal about Derrick Rose's upbringing and how his older brothers and mother steered him clear of gangs and drugs so he could have the great future his talent would allow him to have.  Since being in the NBA, he's contributed to charities in his old Chicago neighborhood.

Because he's young and black, he's an easy target for stereotypes.

And Gary, for someone who likes Derrick Rose, you sure have an odd way of showing it.

and you know this how?  at the party?  so you know that this was in Memphis last year?  and you know who the guy behind him is, too?  Actually, your message is a bit clearer than the one in that picture.  Bitter much?

Also, he is stoned out of his mind in that picture with a big chronic bud on his shirt. Nice! What a role model.

The message is clear. If you are good enough at sports, you can do whatever the heck you want. As long as you retain big money lawyers and issue public appologies when you screw up, no one can touch you.

If Rose could construct sentences like that he may have attempted a career in sports writing instead of professional basketball.  But, that isn't my main point.  Judging people is a risky business.  Derrick Rose has a "party picture" posted by others on the internet.  How has he behaved during his brief professional career?  Does his behavior support the image in the picture?  Maybe he has hidden this gang lifestyle from all of his observers.  If he is not that talented, then a case can be made to believe his issued statement (regardless of who wrote it) above the image in the picture.

Sith,

Where did you buy those rose-colored glasses at? Are they Ray-ban? Hes only.. what, 21 maybe 22.. And already hes cheated on the SAT (kinda a big deal), and there are pics floating around of him being Stoned out of his gourd flashing gang pcs. So, What exactly makes him a great kid? Wish I could be judged on that sliding scale! Sure, those are the worse things (that we've heard about) but hes only 21! Im sure Vick was still petting dogs when he was that age.

I guess he could have been caught smoking a bong too! lol A bong and gang sign and his NBA career would be over.. A big ole who cares should have been applied to the entire situation.   I cant believe I read this, and responded, makes me realize I need another hobby, I think I'll learn to be a glass blower and make bongs for sports stars, and college kids,  you can even choose a gang sign to be sand blasted on the side of the bong!  Could be a lucrative career?
