Calipari pushing Barbee as possible replacement

John Calipari is scheduled to meet with a prominent Memphis booster late Monday afternoon, at which time he is expected to make a pitch for UTEP coach Tony Barbee to succeed him at Memphis if Calipari indeed leaves Memphis for Kentucky, a source close to Calipari told CBSSports.com.

The source said Calipari would promise to help Barbee keep parts of the team and recruiting class intact.

Barbee played for Calipari at UMass and assisted him at Memphis until taking the UTEP job in 2006.

He's 53-43 in three seasons at UTEP.

A source close to the Memphis program said Calipari assured Barbee last offseason that if he pulled out of the UMass search and cleared the way for Memphis assistant Derek Kellogg to land that job that Calipari would push Barbee as a possible successor at Memphis. Barbee quickly pulled out, Kellogg got the UMass job, and now Calipari is making good on his word, trying to help Barbee at Memphis.

So, he gets to empty our cupboards and then hand pick his successor?  Reports are that Witherspoon and Sallie want out, I'm sure Henry will have second thoughts, Dennis is thinking over his options.  If, and only if, Barbee could come in with most of the team intact, it might be worth a thought.  Otherwise, not only no, but hell no.

Take your coaches and players and go collect your $40M.  But leave us alone

Be careful what you wish for.

It will be interesting to see if Memphis can keep the momentum going.  I'm thinking the consensus is no.  That doesn't mean that's the way it will go down, but I think many are skeptical of Memphis being able to keep things going, especially at the level Calipari had it.

Cal thanks for the years and what you've done for the program! But Memphis pleeeeease don't take Barbee. Unfortunately when you leave in this fashion call you have no input on the matters.

Memphis, spend a portion of the money you were going to spend to keep Cal and go get Mike Anderson. His style works in a place like Memphis(surrounded by SEC/ACC/BE schools) where they won't get the best recruits, without Cal.

This is game over for the tiger program for some time.  This is the house that Cal built.  He leaves, so do the recruits, some of the players, and any ability in the short term to be the dynamic team he built.  It's the reason KY is paying the bucks.  Cal is the real deal.  If he goes, so does Memphis for the time being.

This sucks, but it is what it it...  Barbee is not the answer.

With Calipari at Kentucky this will change the entire complection of the SEC. This has been a very clean conference where coaches have not had to cheat.  Calipari is the biggest cheater in the country.  He buys players. Always has, always will.

why not barbee?  he played under him, assisted under him.  our personnel fits his style.

if we bring in an outsider, it will take YEARS to revamp all basketball operations.

i'll take barbee or mike anderson.  for now...

Challenge!!! The only way that deal works is with all the signed recruits and current players staying.
